Unchanged electrical loads…. but why do electricity bills grow?

Solution to high electricity bills for businesses with fully subsidized solar power system

The cost-saving, best-value, and eco-friendly solution for sustainability

Have you ever doubted why your electricity bills grow despite unchanged electrical loads, especially in hotter months?

Strong sun is inseparable from Thai weather. In such a warm climate, businesses must live with the reality of power consuming weather conditions, plus chances that their electricity bills can even double sometimes. As a leading Smart Energy Solutions provider in Asia-Pacific, Banpu NEXT offers Smart Energy Solutions that address issues of large-sized business and industrial enterprises in Thailand to help them trim down their electricity costs and achieve sustainable, eco-friendly business development.

Why do electricity bills grow without additional electrical loads?

With many factors contributing to high electricity bills, Banpu NEXT is sharing a summary of main reasons why electricity bills surge despite little or no increase in electrical loads.

  1. Increase in FT Rate – FT (Float Time) refers to fuel adjustment charge, which is reviewed on a regular basis by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to reflect energy demands at a given time, including price of natural gas. Electricity demands for the period of May – August 2022 amount to 68.731 billion units, an increase of 5.21% from the estimate of 65.325 billion units for the earlier period this year.
  2. Soaring Electricity Bills in the Summer – Another main cause of high electricity bills is hot summer weather that increases the workload of electrical equipment and devices in factories even without extra operation. Data from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority from 2018 to 2020 show significant increase in average energy consumption from April to June, which coincides with summertime increase in temperature and the increase in electricity bills.
  3. High Dependence on Fuel Imports – Natural gas continues to be the main type of fuel used for electricity generation in the period from May to August 2022. Of all fuels used for electricity generation, 55.11% are imported. Moreover, prices of imported coal have risen significantly, resulting in an increase in the average fuel cost used to determine FT rate.
